Any executive in the business world knows the important role that networking plays in their success. From the bottom to the top, networking is more critical than ever in today’s market. The relationships and bonds that are formed through executive networking are what eventually lead to new opportunities and an increase in your perceived value.
Staying on top of your networking game can sometimes be a challenge, especially if you don’t have a plan or a set of networking habits to fall back on. Here are some ideas on methods you can practice until you master executive networking:
Who Do You Know?
Always start with an emphasis on who you already know and have built a relationship with. An established network connection is worth much more than the hope of building new ones. You can this by reconnecting with those in your existing network on a more personal level. This does take time and energy, but if you schedule that time and make it part of your routine, it will become a habit that makes a difference.
Holiday and Thank You Cards
Much has already been said about the significance of a personal hand-written thank you card. We’re only here to remind you that it does work. The same is true for the holiday cards you send each year. Some executives will send anywhere from 500 to a couple thousand holiday cards each year. This typically requires starting much earlier than the weekend after Thanksgiving.
In the digital world we live in, an email or text message just doesn’t carry the weight like a good old-fashioned face-to-face handshake. Make the time to meet with those who are important in your network and make sure you have a purpose for that meeting. Be genuine and thoughtful during these meetings no matter how short or long. When it comes to approaching recruiters, remember that quality counts.
Pay it Forward
A true sign of your commitment to the give and take of executive networking is when you are willing to help propel the careers of others without expecting favors in return. When you act unselfishly to help others get ahead, you are really just making an investment into your own future. Without knowing and without asking, your name may come up again down the road except that now you will be on the receiving end.
